Text of the Week: Week 26

This week's text of the week is all about that favorite uncle so many of us have! Maybe he does great impressions of famous people like my favorite uncle, Uncle Richie! Or maybe he taught you a new skill or inspired you to start collecting coins, stamps or even fancy-dancy cars! My Uncle Richie is always very well behaved and he certainly wouldn't race around town like the character in our poem, but one thing Uncle Richie does have in common with Uncle Dave...he's always lots of fun!

Boys and girls, please read this poem aloud with your best teacher voice more than one time. After you have practiced, please read the poem aloud to you a toy such as your stuffies, Barbies (←that would be my favorite choice!) or Lego characters.

Watch the video I made below and see if you can answer the questions I've posed!

Fun Friday at home!

One of my favorite Fun Friday activities from last year was our marble race design activity! I was thinking this would be a great activity for my students to do at home. Your imagination is your only limit here! You can use just about anything to design your race and then, when it's finished, you can have fun challenging yourself and your family members!

Have a look at all the fun the kids from last year had with this activity!

208 is still great!

Hi boys and girls!
How are you? I'm doing okay, but I miss you all so much! I hope that you are washing your hands lots, keeping up with your reading and making sure you memorize all of our math songs! Be sure to continue with our Lenten promise of acts of service. I know there are all kinds of ways you can help your folks around the house. Sometimes even just staying out of their hair for an hour is helpful!

I am working on some activities for you to do at home, along with ways we can keep in touch. As often as I can, I will be in touch on the blog, Twitter and Instagram with things for you to work on at home and some other fun goodies! 👈Did you see what I did there boys and girls? I used a word we're not allowed to use anymore! Ha ha!🤣 Can you name all 7 of the words we try not to use in our writing anymore?  There's your first home learning assignment!

In addition to trying to remember those 7 words (or is it 6 words chickadees?) please watch the video in the blog post below about how to solve a bake shop problem. You know me...I like it when we make math all about food!

These problems are great ways for you to practice all kinds of math skills all at once.  They're also multi-step problems. Do you recall what that means? You got it...it means more than one step aannnndddd if you mess up on one step, like turning left when you're supposed to turn right, you're going in the wrong direction!

Good luck solving the problems! I'll be in touch again soon!

Peace be with you chickadees 💕
Love Mrs. M

How To Solve Bake Shop Problems

Bake-Shop problems are multi-step problems that involve money.  We call them "Bake-Shop" problems because anytime you make Math delicious, you immediately have everyone's attention!

Here's a video where I explain how to solve these types of problems. If you play the video on full screen, it starts a bit blurry and then clears up nicely about 20 seconds in.

A correction: near the very end of the video, I say that $2.40-$0.85 is $0.55 when I should have said: $2.40-$1.85 is $0.55.

After watching the video, please solve the following problem:

Mrs. M has these coins:

5 quarters

4 dimes
2 nickels

I'd like to buy 4 giant chocolate fudge cupcakes (possibly to share with some people I like, but possibly to keep all for myself).

Each cupcake costs $0.75.

How much more money do I need to buy myself (ha-ha!)my friends the cupcakes?

Unit 6 Practice Test

Please find a link below to the Unit 6 Practice Test.

The boys and girls are going to have their Unit 6 Math test on Wednesday March 11th.

We have covered quite a bit in this large unit:

  • the calendar
  • money
  • how to tell time
  • millilitres and litres
  • grams and kilograms
  • along with problem solving using all of these concepts

Here are the two practice tests that will assist the boys and girls in preparing for the test. We are still learning about money and have not yet completed all our work.

Persuasive Writing

Last week, we began looking at persuasive writing. We had lots of lively discussions about ways we try to persuade others to our way of thinking.  We agreed that the key to persuasive writing is to use the most compelling reasons you can come up with and to know your audience. After all, asking your folks for an expensive toy isn't gonna get you a "yes" if you lead with "it'll be fun!" . We emphasize that we avoid statements that might plant seeds in the readers mind that will cause them to dismiss our suggestion.

Introducing this form of writing is always lots of fun! This video is from 2019..."Come to my way of thinkkkking!" 😂

I have a seven-step formula to help students to be successful with this type of writing.

Here is a video of the Powerpoint I created for my lesson and sadly, the volume is really, really low (perhaps that's a good thing!).

After this, as hard as it is to believe,  we'll move on to one of our last forms of writing to learn: the narrative.
